I live in ND. We have crazy strong winds that whip our apartment building of up to 60 mph. This thing does not budge at ALL. The pots on my porch will be blown over and all a mess, but this things stays strong! Also a plus is you can adjust it for your railing. I was a bit worried because the railing outside is metal and probably 1 1/2 "x 3" and I thought the box would not be able to clip onto such a narrow metal railing. BUT it works great! Held my herbs just fine, and never fell of and killed anyone! YAY! It is also wide enough to hold a couple 9" pots of geraniums. I got a couple of these, and gave one to my mom, she likes it too...I'll probably order more for spring.

This is holding a 36" window box on the railing of a windy balcony. Easy to use, completely adjustable and the lip at the back allows it to hang level. Excellent product.
Flower boxes and biodegradable coco planters offer a wonderful way to bring life and color onto a deck. They may be incorporated into the deck design very easily by hanging them over the railing. Alternatively flower boxes may be placed directly on the deck railing. Another option is to use freestanding flower boxes, coco baskets and plant stands.
If you are building a new deck or having one built, carefully consider how you can incorporate flower boxes into the design of the deck.
If you are planning to have deck railing, think about adding flower boxes to hang over the deck railing. If the deck is situated at a lower level you may want to use flower box stands to hold the flower boxes so that the plants are in line with the deck level.
There are many different types and styles of flower boxes that you can buy such as those lined with biodegradable coco, or plastic inserts. Flower box holders are another option.
Once you have your flower boxes in place, all that’s left is to fill them with soil and plant the flower boxes with pretty annuals, flowering shrubs, or various herbs.
Deck Railing Tips
The type of deck railing you include in your deck designs can have a huge effect on the style and decor of the deck. Even though deck railing is included primarily for safety reasons, it is essential to give careful consideration to the deck railing you choose. Here are expert tips that will help you with your own deck railing design and decor.
There are various types of deck railing including those that have top caps, those built with bollards and ropes, and even those that have steel cable rails so that they don’t get in the way of the view. Choose a deck railing that is in keeping with the style of your house and garden.
Keep in mind how you’d like to decorate your deck railings.
Flower boxes lined with biodegradable coco that can either be hung over the railing or on top, are a perfect way to add life to deck railings.
Flower box holders can also be used to add style to deck railings.
Multi-purpose planters are another option for adding color and personality to deck railings.
Use the same wood for your deck railing as you used for the deck itself and any steps that might lead to the deck. Also finish the deck railing wood in the same way, with the same type of sealant.
If you are building your own deck, use a hand-held router to bevel the edges of the deck railing and capping to create a more professional finish.
The simplest deck railing consists of a series of posts attached to the side of the deck. But you can easily create a deck railing with a crisscross effect by positioning wood posts diagonally with a lap joint in the middle. Just cut a block out of each post, halfway down and slot them together. A low level deck doesn’t need deck railing at all.
