I had a horrible problem with squirrels at my feeders! I bought 2 of these feeders and have now had the pleasure of watching squirrels fall off and not able to even access seed at all!! I have spent sooooo much money on seed and now thanks to this feeder, only the birds get to eat!! Thanks so much! This feeder is excellent. Best one I've ever had. It allows larger seeds and nuts into the feeding port and not get stuck, backing up the rest of the seeds as other feeders do. Seed stays dry even during the hardest rains. Birds love it. Squirrels hate it. Perfect.
halfway to greatnessMarch 10, 2012
Day 1, we were very pleased to see that our tenacious squirrels were foiled in their initial efforts to conquer this feeder. The bottom half of the device works superbly, and the overall design makes it very difficult for squirrels to climb down the feeder. Day 2, imagine our surprise when we see a squirrel banquet in progress. They simply pulled the lid off the feeder, turned it sideways, and proceeded to devour birdseed out of both sides of the top of the feeder. I have resorted to duct tape to secure the lid. Either our squirrels are trained engineers, or this feeder is only halfway to greatness. RESPONSE FROM AVANT GARDEN DECOR April 20, 2012 Thank you for reviewing the Perky-Pet® Fortress® The Breakaway Squirrel Proof Bird Feeder (model 5110PP). We appreciate your feedback concerning the lid to this feeder. As you have experienced protecting your birdfeeder from squirrels can be an endless battle for many backyard birdfeeders like yourself. Using a feeder like this is a great way to prevent squirrels from gaining access to the seed inside. To avoid these pests from accessing your feeder often times a more holistic approach is needed. Try hanging your feeder 10 feet from the nearest squirrel launching site and at least 5 feet off of the ground. We hope you find this information to be helpful.
