Seed StartingSeed starting

Seeds are nature’s way of reproducing plant life. But we can also grow plants deliberately from garden seeds ourselves, either directly in the ground, or in containers where we tend the growing seedlings until they are strong enough for us to plant them out. Most of us plant garden seeds that are produced commercially.

Tips about Seed Starting Soil

seed starting soil

If you are going to propagate your own plants from seed, you need to be sure that you have suitable seed starting soil. You also need to be sure that you know what sort of seed starting soil is suitable for different types of garden plants. Here are some tips to help you:

  1. Generally the best seed starting soil will be a sterilized mix that has been prepared specially for growing plants from seed.

  2. Once you have sprinkled laid seeds in seed starting soil, cover them with a thin layer of soil and then water properly.

  3. Commercially ready seed starting soil and seedlings packaged in containers are also available and an easy way to begin growing seeds.

  4. Peat pots and peat pellets are a brilliant new option for seed starting soil that will practically guarantee healthy seedlings.

  5. Be aware that even with the very best seed starting soil, germinating seeds and seedlings do require constant (everyday) attention.

  6. Whichever type of seed starting soil you use, you can begin early – even before spring – if you house them indoors.

  7. You should cover germinating seeds, but when the first signs of life appear out of the seed starting soil, remove this cover.
