Our June Plant of the Month is Verbena (Verbenas or Vervains).
This stunning, small size flower with five petals is mostly shades of blue and purple, but can be found in white or pink. They require little care and are great for attracting butterflies and hummingbirds. Once they have matured they will spread out to make a good ground covering for your landscape.
Verbena plants are drought-resistant and will do well in either partial or full sun. They prefer well-drained, average soils.
Verbena grows from 1 to 3 feet tall and are said to be deer resistant. The plant grows well in window boxes, containers and hanging baskets. Soil for Verbena should be well-drained. In fact, plant Verbena in the sunniest, best-draining location in your yard for best results. Too much moisture can lead to powdery mildew.
Another possible problem your Verbena may experience is an infestation of spider mites. Treat your Verbena with Safer® Brand Insect Killing Soap to rid your plants of these (and many other) pests.
As a perennial flowering plant, you can look forward to seeing it for many years to come!
